  Tapped into Craft Libations and Victuals Big Bear Black Stout Spencer: Bear Republic opened in wine country, Sonoma County in 1995.  In 1996 they were named “Small Brewing Company of the Year” and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival.  The beer that put them on the map is the Racer 5(India Pale Ale) but we sampled the Big Bear Black Stout. Weighing in at 8.1% ABV this is definitely a “Big” beer! Lots of caramel and roasty flavors finish this smooth Russian Imperial Stout with the addition of Centennial and Cascade hops.
